An eight-week MBSR program: web-based, self-paced, and free.

meditate chairI’ve just found* an online source that promises to guide anyone/anywhere through the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. Video presentations, articles, worksheets, and specific instruction can be accessed from open sources and there’s no charge. What a brilliant concept and a generous offer by its developer!

The main advantages are flexibility of scheduling and absence of fees; you can commence the program at any time. The standard class-based MBSR program comprises eight weeks of group learning and, unless covered by health plans, can cost several hundred dollars in fees.

However, the key to benefiting from any MBSR program is the completion of weekly assignments and a gradual development of a personal meditation practice. It calls for a daily time commitment of an hour for 8 weeks.

The program is offered by Dave Potter, a certified MBSR instructor and licensed psychotherapist in anxiety, stress, and trauma. He writes that “the absolute best way to learn MBSR is with a live, in-person class, where you have the benefit of interaction with the instructor and other class members, and the group support that this provides, sometimes that’s just not possible.” Click here for details.

I’m not endorsing the quality of this program since it’s new to me. My intention is to work through the program on my own, with the hope that it’ll invigorate my teaching and mindfulness practice.

* A study using this program with a group of medical students has just been published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine. Researchers found that “[c]hanges in the expected direction were observed for perceived stress, mindfulness, resilience, and confidence in providing calm, compassionate care.”

What a wonderful gift and an opportunity for me to renew my practice and understanding.
Lacking the live group experience, would a small study group be possible? We could check in (online probably) once a week to help support each other and keep going?

a brilliant idea, Fran, what a way to invigorate one’s practice. I’d be glad to join someone who wants to do this, but can’t be the organizer.

The course comes with a manual to print, videos, readings, meditations, and a daily worksheet. I’d be happy to periodically meet or email anyone undertaking the course. For me the difficulty will be continuing after the first few weeks and any support will be appreciated.

Fran, I love your comment that the trouble will be continuing after the first few weeks. I do so relate to that as I am a great starter at things but then just seem to let things slide. At this point certain stresses and pains are just telling me I need another tool to work with. That day the note came from Peter, and, I thought, better pay attention! I am planning to start the online course in two weeks. Maybe I could ask Peter to forward you my email and we can just see how this all unfolds. All the best. B.

Hi Barbara, Yes, let’s connect by email through Peter. There are now three of us to help each other follow through our intentions. We could check on progress once a week. Thank you. F

I echo Barbara and Fran’s comments. This course looks really interesting and may be just what I need. I’m going to start it today, and see how it goes, and I know that I’ll need motivation to keep me going. Would love to be part of an online group. love and best wishes to all. Miss you!

Four of us now are supporting each other as we work through this online course. We are all on different weeks but find we have much to discuss and checking in keeps us on track. We welcome anyone who would like to join us.

What a gift! Thank you! He even has closed captioning on several of his videos. I am hearing impaired and have spent over two years looking for a self-paced mindfulness course but most require Skype or videos without CC. I am sharing the link to your site on my Facebook page.

I took an 8 week MBSR course ten years ago when going through breast cancer. Recently I have had anxiety and dug out my “Full Catastrophe Living” book by Jon Kabat Zin since I felt I need a refresher. I just came across your website and tried one of your guided meditations. I am very grateful. Thank you!
